Ladies and Gentleman, meet Kellie White: “I ran a mile or two - TopicsExpress

Ladies and Gentleman, meet Kellie White: “I ran a mile or two occasionally in college trying to avoid the Freshman 15, but other than that, I avoided it like the plague. In 2001, a friend convince me to run a half. I had no idea how long that was when I agreed. I half-heartedly trained on the treadmill and was up to 9 miles the week before the race. Four days before the race I contracted a virus that resulted in a cross-reaction with an antibiotic that I’d been taking. I missed a month of grad school because of the allergic reaction to the antibiotic; it also left joint pain that prevented me from running more than a couple of miles without severe knee pain for days after. That summer, my friend passed away from a rare disease. Fast-forward to 2011 when a stair climber gym challenge made me realize that my knee pain was gone. I thought maybe I could finally run that half to honor my friend. I ran a few short distance races and then in January 2012 ran my first half marathon with a PR of 1:34:17. I had to take time off for Achilles tendonitis, but came back in the fall and qualified for Boston in my first marathon in Savannah at 3:25:43. Unfortunately, while training for the marathon, I developed a pain in my hip. Turns out it was gluteal medial tendonitis that most likely resulted from the fact I have little to no feeling in the front of my left hip that changed my proprioception, and thus, my stride. I had to take Jan-Jun 2013 off to rehab. Since that time, I’ve qualified again for Boston in two more marathons, and I believe that speed work played a role in getting back to where I was before my injury.” Kellie can speak from experience on the good and bad of speed training and now knows how to do it and do it right! We look forward to having her on the panel and you can meet her Monday evening at 6:30pm her at NEWSole!
