Lagos Uncovers Another 20 Defective Buildings. The Lagos State Government has uncovered another 20 distressed buildings at Ebute Metta area of Lagos, southwest Nigeria, as more defective buildings continue to collapse in the state. The state government said that the new finding has brought the number of distressed buildings that have been uncovered in the area to 50. Two weeks ago, 30 defective buildings were discovered by the government. The General Manager, Lagos Building and Control Agency, (LABCA) Mrs. Abimbola Animashaun, disclosed that five of the distressed buildings would immediately be demolished. Animashaun, who made this public at an inspection and sensitization campaign tagged Road Show in Ebute-Metta said the distressed buildings were located on Borno Way, Herbert Macaulay and Kadara streets and other suburbs of the area. “We have identified about 20 buildings apart from those identified before and I believe there are still many that are yet to be discovered. So we will continue with the exercise. We were on Lagos Island last month but we are in the Mainland now. “The awareness level is increasing now; people are now calling us to report the state of their homes. After going to those homes, we discovered that some are truly in bad shape. We will still go to many markets, because those in the markets are also helping us to discover more buildings in bad condition,” she stated. Animashaun said that government can no longer tolerate a situation where distressed buildings are left to stand until they collapse and kill people, adding that it would continue to sensitise people to do what is right. She urged Lagosians to report any ongoing construction work without a sign board to indicate the nature of work on the site. “If there is no sign board indicating construction work is ongoing, people should know that such contractors are doing illegal thing because construction work must have a signboard. If the signboard is missing, it means they are hiding something.” Meanwhile, five people have been confirmed dead and three people seriously injured as another two-storey building under construction collapsed on Sunday morning in Surulere area of Lagos. The building, located at 32/36 Ishaga Road, Surulere, collapsed after a heavy rainfall. General Manager, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, LASEMA, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, confirmed that the building collapsed around 10.a.m. after a heavy rainfall, disclosing that three out of the five people that were injured had been treated, while the two others were still receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital. Oke-Osanyintolu said that the rescue operation was still on to ascertain if some people were still under the debris. He noted that investigation about the incident was still ongoing, but hinted that the building might have collapsed because the developer of the building used substandard materials. The National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA, in its report said four people, including a 13-year old bread hawker died in the collapsed building. NEMA’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Farinloye, told P.M.NEWS that two of those injured had been taken to the Accident and Emergency Unit on Lagos-Ibadan Expressway while another victim who needed surgical operation was taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, LASUTH. According to him, the house had been marked two times for the developer to stop construction, but he continued working on the building until it collapsed Sunday. He added that no construction worker was on site when the building collapsed.
