Lagos-based human rights lawyer Festus Keyamo has condemned the Nigeria Police for blocking access to the National Assembly by lawmakers on purported intelligence reports of impending invasion by thugs. In a statement, Keyamo described the police action as ‘pure illegality’, adding that even if the officers acted on the orders of the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and not the court, such cannot be decided as he is not a law unto himself. He said in the face of the barricade, the lawmakers had no option than to scale the gates to protect the will of the people. “I am very proud of those lawmakers who scaled that gate. They are the bold, courageous and uncompromising lawmakers we so dearly need in this country to stand up against tyranny and to protect our democracy,” he said. Meanwhile, Keyamo has filed an action before a Federal High Court in Abuja seeking an order of mandamus to compel the Inspector General of Police and the Director of State Security Services to investigate his allegations of death threats on him by ex-Niger Delta militant leader Government Ekpemupolo, also known as Tompolo.
