#LagosTalksInConclusion With all your calls and messages from both sides of the debate, Lagos you have spoken! o sum up, heres a little word from us: Oby Ezekwesili referenced democracy a lot in her tweets, and part of what makes a democracy in today’s world is our freedom of speech and right to protest, however how far can we take this right? We have seen the bring back our girls protesters and in turn Oby Ezekwesili, up front and centre, and without them would the girls still be such a prominent subject in the media? However, there has been violence marring demonstrations, charges of the group belonging to opposition parties and a whole lot more. All in all this has turned into a very politically sensitive situation and that is where the issue of detention and arrest comes in. While on the surface to detain and to arrest a person are extremely similar – they both connote taking a person into custody or stop them from proceeding, there is a fundamemtal difference and that is between reasonable suspicion and probable cause. To detain a person, you only need a reasonable suspicion that the person is going to commit a crime or exacerbate a politically sensitive situation while, to arrest someone you need more than that. The long and short of it is that means that if a reasonable person is detained, that person would feel as though they could leave in a short amount of time. The same cannot be said for that same person if he or she has been arrested. So the question stands, with the DSS stating that they did NOT arrest Oby Ezekwesili but only detained her; if she did not take to social media to promote her plight, would she have been allowed to leave the custody of the DSS within the timeframe that she did?
