Laikipia North Bursary Bias A section of residents and leaders in Laikipia North constituency have accused area Member of Parliament of bias and tribalism in offering bursaries to needy secondary and tertiary institutions students. They said the legislator, Mathew Lempurkel is offering bursaries to members of a certain community and sidelining others. Gikandi Gathara, a resident of Ngenia village in the constituency said majority of residents in the area have been crying foul over the fund to no success. “We have been seeking help from the MP and nothing seems to change. He should understand that he was elected by members of all the communities living in Laikipia North,” said Gathara Speaking at Ngenia and Mia Moja primary schools in the constituency while donating sanitary towels and books, nominated Member of Parliament Sarah Lekorere (URP) supported the allegations. She said she has received several complaints from the members of the community over the bursary allocation, noting that no one should be segregated. Lekorere said it is unethical and inhuman to sideline certain communities in development matters. Mukogodo East ward representative Paul Leshuel who accompanied Lekorere said similar complaints have been raised by residents in his ward. Leshuel said he is suspicious with the number of students given bursary in Sosian ward, adding that they could be from another county. “Initial report we have is that there are 1,000 students who benefited with bursary in Sosian ward. In actual sense, there is no such a number of students there. We suspect they could be from Oldonyiro,” said Leshuel. Contacted yesterday, the MP however denied the allegations saying the bursary committee is yet to convene and scrutinize the applicants. Ends
