Lal ceased to be himself and the Prince was born !! -Suhasini Maniratnam On-Screen/off-screen personality metamorphosis is something an actor finds it tough to master, opines Actress/Director/Producer Smt.Suhasini Maniratnam at the recently concluded 103rd annual meet at Ladies Recreation Club, The Wellingdon one of the oldest association at Chennai (erstwhile Madras). One small instance I could cite would be the movie Iruvar. Mani ( Mani Ratnam, Director) helmed the project, where I associated with my husband writing the dialogues out. As you know, the movie did find troubled waters for the plot back then; but was much celebrated and discussed years down. We were shooting a fantasy song with Mr. Mohanlal , Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhubala. It was around mid 1996 which I recollect was just before the Film Employees Federation strike. I had to be on sets and Mani, Santosh and crew were getting the frame ready. Lal and me were having a serious chat on an incident and suddenly the take was ready to be canned. Lal in his warrior prince costume went over rather serenely and gave in some subtle dance postures with Madhubhala. Having known Lal for years, this was a revelation for me. Because the very Lal whom I had spoken to a few minutes ago just vanished. Even his personality felt a split one for me. Lal who is often told to bring in his magical, signature mannerisms in all his movies, for the first time amazed me. The dance mudras and the charm in his eyes were so befitting and effortless that Lal ceased to be himself and the Prince was born right there. I felt so little as an actress myself, having to consume hours of preparation to get into a character skin. Here I was witnessing this actor ceasing to be himself and transforming like a possessed soul. Mani and some others in the crew clapped after cut, a rare gesture from the tough taskmaster he is. Just a single take. So I knew I wasnt alone in this emotion. How did you pull that one out ?. I overheard a bemused Santosh asking Lal. Lal gave his always available coy smile in reply.
