Laminate flooring - is a floor covering that appears similar to hardwood but is made with a plywood or medium density fiberboard (MDF) core with a plastic laminate top layer. HDF laminate consists of high density fiberboard topped by one or more layers of decorative paper and a transparent protective layer. Laminate may be more durable than hardwood, but cannot be refinished like hardwood. Laminate flooring is available in many different patterns which can resemble different woods or even ceramic tile. It usually locks or taps together. Laminate flooring has grown significantly in popularity, perhaps because it may be easier to install and maintain than more traditional surfaces such as hardwood flooring. It may also have the advantages of costing less and requiring less skill to install than alternative flooring materials. It is reasonably durable, hygienic and relatively easy to maintain. It has the disadvantage of being made of a plastic (melamine resin) derived from formaldehyde and because it is usually designed for light domestic use may be less durable than more conventional flooring, having a probably life of less than five years in heavy domestic use.
