Lana Del Rey is in a way my counter to Yo Yo Honey - TopicsExpress

Lana Del Rey is in a way my counter to Yo Yo Honey Singh. Seriously! And I know many of you will be able to relate to this. It was about a year ago. I had woken up early and was brushing my teeth standing in the balcony. I could faintly hear Dope-Shope because my neighbours young son had a habit of playing music that early in the morning. I sighed. I left for work and drove on the Delhi-Gurgaon highway. As I waited for the light to turn green at one of the red lights, a white Santro stopped right next to my car. The Santro had black film on the windows so I could not see who was inside, but I could hear Lungi Dance blaring out aloud from inside. I sighed. I reached my office. The morning and the afternoon passed uneventfully. I had a lot of work that day, so I was forced to stay back in office late. At around 7 PM, I overheard the conversation of two of my colleagues who sat a few rows away from my desk. Oye, you have any good songs in your phone? Bhai, I dont have many songs. Honey Singh? Yes, that I have. For the next couple of minutes, I tried to tolerate Blue Eyes. But once that song ended another song by the same artist began. I sighed. I left my office and drove back home. The first radio station I tuned into was playing a Honey Singh song, so I changed the station, but that one too was playing a Honey Singh song. I sighed. I returned home, exhausted. An hour later, I logged on to You Tube hoping to discover some nice songs to wash away the sins of that day. There was a wedding in my locality that night, and needlessly to say, every third song they played was by Honey Singh. I sighed continuously for the hour. My You Tube search threw up some new artists. I decided to sort all those videos by the number of views hoping to mitigate my search. I played a few videos which had in excess of a hundred million views. They turned out to be awful. The seventh or the eighth video had about seventy million views. The thumbnail featured a young woman with long hair in a sepia tinted graphic. The title looked alluring, and gave me a strong feeling that this was probably what I was searching for. I sighed, a little differently this time. The rest, as they say, is history. * Discovering Lana Del Rey * © Abhijit Chakraborty 2014 | From the archives
