Land Grabbing matters Residents of Mwireri village in Laikipia East district have claimed back a parcel of public land that had been grabbed by an individual in the region. The land which was initially being used by the community as their meeting ground and was even funded by world Vision to build a hall was grabbed by a neighbor who claimed it was part of his land. However after a long battle with the community the occupier surrendered the parcel in a public meeting attended by the area Member of Parliament Anthony Mutahi. Speaking at the site, Laban Nguyo noted that he was tired of being the talk of the village and decided to give back the land. He however appealed to the Mp to assist him move his house from the one acre piece of land to his adjacent farm. The land will now be occupied by the area Chief as it is located at the centre of Umande Location thus bringing services closer to the people. At the same time Laikipia East CDF has commissioned an Administration police camp at the site with an initial cost of shillings 1.1million. The kitty has also purchased equipments for the Chiefs office worth over shillings one hundred thousand to make sure that all the services continue uninterrupted following the relocation. The camp will be vital in maintaining security in the area that is commonly hit by cattle theft which are later driven towards Laikipia north and Isiolo County. “We want to put all public land grabbers on notice in the region that it is the high time all public land was returned and put to its use to benefit the community,” said Mutahi He said corruption will not be tolerated in the constituency and residents should identify all public land that has been grabbed. Daiga division assistant county commissioner Elijah Maranga urged residents to work with the police in fighting crime especially during the festive season. “All escape routes that are commonly used by cattle thieves have been sealed with the collaboration of neighbouring ranchers and we assure residents that this season they will have peace but must also work closely with the security agents,” urged Maranga Ends
