Land turns back into a dump-site An open ground, in between Hamad Town and Damasthan, which was earlier cleansed by the Municipality after being turned into an illegal dumpsite, is returning back to its former plight. Followed by reports published of the open ground, in Al Louzy near roundabout no. 2 in block 1016, being misused as an illegal dumping site, the municipality cleared the entire area but lately the place is spotted to be turning back into a dumping site once again with household garbage, electronic and industrial waste been regularly disposed off. Huge heaps of waste are sighted at various spots along the ground with insect hovering over it and the odor eliminating diverges in the air causing a major discomfort to the neighborhood. ‘Last year when the media threw light on this issue the municipality took immediately action and started to clear the land, leveling it. Few months following the land was intact but soon after the dumping started again and we have reached back to square one’, said a local resident. With the land filled will heaps of waste, land owners have a tough time to sell them. “When investors visit the area, the very sight of it discourages them to make the next move. We as land owner stay far away and we can’t come here to see how the land is. This has become a serious problem for us.” complained a land owner Mr. Omar. ‘Illegal dumping is a persistent problem because it threatens human health and the environment. The government is responsible for establishing laws and programs to control and prevent the illegal disposal of waste on private property.’ he added. Amidst the dumped waste, the land also possesses an open toilet built from asbestos sheets by the laborers working on the nearby construction site, for themselves. Into a pipe that leads into a pit is where they defecate and once the pit is filled up, the waste is removed and thrown in the open nearby. The ‘pit’ is covered only with an old carpet. Despite a notice board been put up by the municipality exhorting the public to stop dumping waste, the violators turning a blind eye continue to dump their rubbish. The area also sports bare roads that are not connected to the highways.
