Laney High School has launched a new STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Program for the 2014-2015 school year. “The STEM classes have already heard from professional guest speakers ranging from a nuclear engineer to a physician’s assistant in surgical dermatology,” said Principal Allen O’Briant. “I look forward to seeing how our students who join one of the cohorts as a freshman grow and become more interested in the STEM areas and where it takes them after graduation.” Students in the new STEM program have been involved with a variety of lab activities and cross curricular assignments. The engineering cohort has had the opportunity to visit the University of North Carolina Wilmingtons Two-plus-Two engineering program. The new STEM program is designed to educate all students by providing rigorous educational opportunities that emphasize high standards and continuous improvement in science, mathematics, biomedical technology and engineering, to prepare them for citizenship, higher education, and global competition in the 21st century. Students in the program will take a rigorous course load throughout their four years of high school. Students will take specific electives tailored to the biomedical or engineering fields. They will also be strongly encouraged to take courses through NC School of Science and Mathematics, NC Virtual Public Schools and Cape Fear Community College. The STEM program is divided into two cohorts: Biomedical and Engineering. The cohort begins in ninth grade and continues through graduation. Students can apply to the program during the spring of their eighth grade year. One of the major objectives of the program is to partner with businesses, community organizations, and local educational institutions to provide the following for students: 1. Specific information about industry and career pathways 2. Industry Mentors 3. Possible Job Shadowing or Internship Opportunities 4. Industry and Campus tours 5. Volunteer opportunities for students 6. Guest Speakers 7.
