Lansing: Rep. Glardon measure to help ensure patient safety. State Rep. Ben Glardon today introduced legislation to protect Michigan patients by requiring training standards to operate radiation machines. Glardon introduced House Bill 4869 after Gary Duehring, PhD, a constituent and adjunct professor at Baker College of Owosso and Central Michigan University, brought the issue to his attention. With the exception of mammography machine operators, there are no minimal standards of training or education for operators of machines that use radiation. "I think most Michigan patients would be surprised to find out that people who operate radiation machines currently need no formal training," said Glardon, R-Owosso. “Establishing education and training standards for these machine operators is not only a safety issue, it will ensure quality images that can lead to early detection and diagnosis. Subpar images can lead to more testing, delays in treatment and ultimately an increase in health care costs.” Michigan is one of only 11 states with no minimum education and certification standards who administer medical radiation.
