Laos and Timor Leste battle to draw LAOS and Timor Leste played out to a 1-1 draw in their final group stage match of the Hassanal Bolkiah Trophy at the Balapan Track and Field of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas last night. Laos started brightly in the first-half, dominating the midfield with their fluid passes and movement, while Timor Leste parked most of their players in their own half with Olegario Barreto H P Boavida playing as a lone striker upfront. Laos came close to scoring in the 10th minute when Kioviengpheth Lithideth set Sitthideth Khantavong up just in front of goal, but the latter volleyed the ball wide. Phouttassay Khocalern broke the deadlock in the 14th minute, scoring from 20 metres out to beat Timor Lestes goalkeeper Fagio Augsto DA S Pereira. Rufino Walter Gama should have equalised for Timor Leste at the half hour mark when he was given plenty of space to shoot from the edge of the penalty box, but his shot went straight into goalkeeper Soukthavy Soundala’s arms. Timor Leste found their rhythm in the final ten minutes of the first half with their short passing game but they found it hard to penetrate the Laotian defence and midfielder Jose Carlos De Fonseca tried his luck from distance but his shot did not trouble the Lao custodian. Sitthideth nearly doubled Laos’ lead a minute later when he made a strong run into the penalty box. The striker sent in a low cross for Xaisongkham Champatong, but Timor Leste’s centre-back Anggisu Correia De Almeuda Barbosa was quick to clear the danger. Kioviengpheth was a threat for Timor Leste all night, constantly making dangerous forays into the penalty area to set his teammates up inside the box. Laos were reduced to 10 men early in the second-half when Sitthideth was shown a red card by Brunei referee Hadimin Shahbudin just seven minutes after the restart following a dangerous tackle on Barbosa. Fonseca should have made it 1-1 in the 60th minute when he was sent through by Gama and was one-on-one with goalkeeper, but the midfielder squandered the opportunity by sending the ball over the bar. Timor Leste wasted another chance to score when striker Henrique Wilson DA C Martins’ effort went just a few inches wide. But Martins would not missed the chance in the 78th minute when he slammed home Adelino T Coelho M De Olivieras cross from close range. Fonseca crashed the wood work just a few minutes later as Timor Leste pushed for a winner. Oliviera almost put Timor Leste ahead in the dying minutes when he was picked by Boavida at the near post, but the striker hit the side netting as both team walked away with a point each.
