Large clinical trials have consistently shown a reduction in cardiovascular disease risk and mortality associated with increased nut consumption. Walnuts are unique in the fact that they contain a high amount of polyunsaturated fats when compared to other nuts that are primarily high in monounsaturated fatty acids. In a meta-analysis of thirteen different clinical trials reported in the July 2009 edition of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the researchers found that a diet high in consumption of walnuts significantly decreased total and LDL cholesterol levels. This review article also showed that high dietary walnut intake decreased markers of inflammation and had no adverse effect on overall weight. These changes were felt to be the reason why walnut consumption decreases the risk of cardiovascular disease.
