Largely the virtual you (the Facebook or Twitter you) is an idealized version of yourself, right? Most of the time you aren’t going to post embarrassing things or things that make you look bad. So the virtual you is an incomplete yet better human being. Maybe you want the internet you to be the “real” you, the one that matters, the one that people mourn when you die. But then again, there doesn’t necessarily need to be death for the digital you. It could be immortal if people made it so. People such as Christopher Hitchens and George Carlin continue to tweet long after their deaths. Man, two great atheists with life after death - what irony. ...So is the version of you that will exist years after your death the “real” you, the one that matters? Aren’t we all sort of fighting for immortality? If so, the virtual versions are far beating out the fleshy versions. Maybe we’ll reach a time when the fleshy versions are just there to get the ball rolling – to create the digital version and then die off, kinda like a video game creator walks away after the world is up and running. He throws up his hands, pushes his chair back and says, “You assholes take care of things. I’m on break.” .....Do you agree? Disagree?
