Larry StultsBoca Grande Old Days 2 hrs · . In 1944 the Stults Family moved from Chicago to Cabbage Key. My dad was in the 8th grade. In fact he was the entire 8th grade that year. Joe Celec ran the school boat to pick up the island kids (see photo: my Uncle Taylor is standing in the bow helping the girl board the school boat). Joes boat had no transmission, so as soon as he pulled the starter cord the boat was going. He had to turn off the engine and coast in order to dock. I think he even had port and starboard ropes to steer with - no steering wheel. To top it off it had a single cylinder (one-lunger) engine right in the middle of the boat that was not enclosed in an engine box. Now the island kids knew a city slicker when they saw one. They each touched the spark plug on the running engine, being careful to touch only the white porcelain insulator part. They then dared Dad to also touch the spark plug, which he did. But not knowing to avoid touching the metal part, he promptly got a big shock . . . and the island kids all got a big laugh!
