Larry Wood photo of one of the local wolf pack. It took our naturalist guides more than 10 years and several life cycles of the wolf pack in the Alaskas Hallo Bay Bear Camp area before these wolves allowed themselves to be more easily observed. In the early Spring 20 years ago when the Camp was being setup we came across a wolf that had been shot from the air, crawled off and left to die. We also observed another wolf that appeared to be wounded. Today this type of illegal airborne wolf hunting activity does not occur in our area due to our continued presence and technological monitoring abilities. We are one of two permanent locations on the 465 mile long Pacific Coastline of Katmai National Park. The nearest Park Ranger Station is 100 air miles distant at King Salmon and the weather more often than not prohibits the Rangers from patrolling the coast thus Hallo Bay Bear Camp is the constant physical presence as a deterrent to would be poachers.
