Laser in Skin Care The word laser simply means Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation and the radiation is ‘light’. With special devices like the laser machine different section of light can be recreated for treatment. This application or devices are used in every area of life including Medicine and specifically Aesthetic Medicine e.g. facial rejuvenation. While the world is running away from the traditional way of making people look good by the use of surgery, the laser on the other hand is safe because it cannot penetrate more than 1 cm of the skin except where it is focus and devise for purpose of cutting into the body A lot of people are concerned about their skin especially because of the volume of hours or amount of sun exposure. . In Africa people tend do have a lot of sun exposure with subsequent sun burn to their face, neck and the sun exposed area of the body. In an attempt for the body to repair the damage area the work tend to be too much for the body to correct or handle. Subsequently, the body will end up with uneven patches of dark and clear area in any involved part of the body. This is even worse for ladies who are using toning creams or quinolone content creams (the so called blue and black face look). With increasing awareness of the general populace especially the ladies there tend to be abuse of all sorts of make ups and bleaching agent to cover the skin bleaches with resultant more damage especially to those using the quinolone containing bleaching agent. The quinolone containing agent do more damage because it suppress the production of melanin which is supposed to shield the skin from damage to the sun and also to reduce the chances of developing skin cancer. The skin thickness also thins out progressively with poor body healing because of suppression of collagen production which is the main support of the skin. Also noticed in our environment is the use of substance like gluthathione which is a skin whitening drug though anti-oxidant reduces the amount of melanin being produced by the body and subsequent skin damage. However, the laser treatment in cosmetics skin care is not like that because it only destroys the dead and dying cells of the skin and promotes new skin production. It also improve the texture of the skin after treatment (Pinar et al Semin Cutan Med Surg 32:41-52).In addition, it also accelerates healing of any damage part of the skin when used at a low level. This has to be done by the appropriate experts especially a professional in laser or a laser specialist. The laser can and is also used for a lot of other skin treatments ranging from acne (pimples), sunburn treatment, vitiligo, and stretch marks. Its use especially as a low level laser in the treatment of wound and chronic pain cannot be overemphasized. It can also be used to detoxify the body and remove hair permanently from the body. The full extent of laser use is yet to be fully explored and I am sure in the future we will have to make references to some of these write ups on laser.
