Last Day in Haiti...by HCI Founder, Carla Ives My bags are packed and the clock is ticking. Soon Ill be leaving Haiti and returning to my family in the USA. Its always a tug-of-war with part of my heart remaining here...or in Nigeria, Uganda...all have become second homes for me. Yesterday we completed our first portion of the Childrens Ministry Training Institute. Despite rioting in parts of Port au Prince, the teachers returned and we had a wonderful day. At the close they presented me with two special gifts. The first was a beautiful wooden pen-holder with my name for my desk. The second was a lesson they created for children in Haiti - they hoped I would pass it on to others through HCI Africa. Tears came to my eyes as they shared their excitement about the training and the future of childrens ministry in Haiti. The gifts spoke volumes to me. For the first time since I began here, Haiti gave back. It marked the beginning of a new kind of ministry here and my heart rejoiced. I spent the boiling hot afternoon doing crafts with the children at our home. We created a display of hand-made, paper fish for the wall in the boys room. The girls decorated hearts and we made paper flowers for their room. They were VERY proud. :) Power was out, but we had a staff meeting in the evening anyway. I thanked these incredible women and our beloved administrator, Pastor Pierrott over and over again. After fresh training concerning the care of the children, we prayed. So precious! My last night in Haiti was eventful though! The lights came on suddenly in the night and the mamas came to get me. Bed bugs have invaded - a common occurance in Haiti. This brand lives in the wood - but not for long! The spray is on the way this morning an they will soon be DEAD-bugs! :) We stomped out all we could last night. Next came dogs howling and a random gun-shot. Ahhhh...a peaceful night in Haiti. :) Thank you for praying for our home - for giving, supporting, and loving the children who live here. And for praying home the four who will return this week. Life IS sweet at My Hearts Home!
