Last Friday I participated in a career fair at Sylvan Hills Middle School. While I was there I engaged a group of young boys in conversation eventually on the subject of Zombies. They asked me if I thought Zombies were real. I inform them that zombies are real. They look at me puzzled as I gave my answer to the question. I asked them do you know what a zombie is? Many replied Yes a creature that eats brains. I chuckled and said yes they eat brains all right... I offered them this. A zombie is someone who is unconscious and unaware. A zombie is somebody who is unaware of the systemic economic educational political social and cultural surroundings. A zombie is someone who is hollow and void of understanding what is going on in life a zombie exists to satisfy simple cravings. A zombie was to eat your brain because the zombie does not want you to be conscious and aware of the apparatus that destroys your dreams; that key issue in a perpetual state of sleepwalking. In the 21st century we have volumes up on volumes of historical records and personal accounts of lives being lost in the apparatus of Jim Crow. Although I understand rage in anger I believe we must be more systemic in our approach to dismantling structures and systems that seek to destroy and disenfranchise our communities both internally and externally. I believe there is personal responsibility and communal responsibility in addressing these issues. We must rise up in the best of our ancestors and approach the problem strategically and succinctly. Dont give away your power to reactionary emotion that lead to distances in circles but channel that emotion to hammer out long term change for the betterment of all humanity. Yes be enraged but let that rage light a fire that burns longer than the charred buildings in your community. #itaintover
