Last Friday, Peace Corps Uganda, in partnership with USAID, the Ministry of Education and Sports, Reading Association of Uganda, Mango Tree, and others celebrated the seven P3 Champions of the First National My Language Spelling Bee. Earlier this year, participants competed in their local languages, including Luganda, Leblango, Lebacholi, Runankole-Rukiga, Runyoro-Rutoro, Ateso, and Lugbarati. The P3 National Champions came to Kampala for an awards presentation with their parents, classroom teachers, and Head Teachers to receive certificates and prizes. The My Language Spelling Bee was implemented in 15 districts across Uganda, reaching over 3,400 P3 pupils and 400 educators throughout the country. This low-cost, high-impact activity promotes early literacy skills, encourages local language development, and inspires pride in the many cultures of Uganda. It is our hope that each year we see more local languages join in this exciting activity and helping to grow the culture of reading. Congratulations to our winners!
