Last Saturday a bunch of us attended DRP’s Dynamic Suspension Measurement Seminar hosted by Holmes Motorsports. Lynnie Doughton of DRP gave a good thought provoking presentation plus we got to see Ed Holmes DRP Pull Down Rig in action. Although Lynnie talked about some complicated subjects which strictly apply to asphalt late models he talked about some really basic things that apply to every racer. I want to pass on two of these. 1) String it, scale it, race it. Stringing (or laser aligning) the car is as important as scaling the car and both should be done before any racecar hits the track. If you don’t string the car you don’t have any way of knowing if your axle tubes are bent or if your wheels are pointing exactly where they should be pointing. If you have a bent axle tube and you don’t know it you can chase handling problems all season long. This really struck home because we’ve had numerous quick change rear ends come in for rebuilding. While talking to the owners they’ve mentioned how they have chased a push or loose condition all season, have changed springs, shocks and etc. and never fixed their problem. Then Jay starts working on their Q.C and we find a bent tube. 2) Winning racers are the guys (or gals) that understand the basics and consistently get the basics right year in and year out. Their cars are properly set up, aligned, scaled and maintained. They understand what their spring and shock combination is doing and etc. Racers that don’t take care of the basics but are constantly trying some new “super fly” set up do not consistently win races. Thanks to Ed Holmes for hosting the seminar. It was time well spent, plus his wife put on one heck of a lunch!
