Last Saturday was a great success. We had 75 people come through the farm and wool studio. The guys cleaned up the cattle wagon that Van made in high school, put down hay bales for folks to sit and we used that to move people from one side of the farm to the other. We had a small pen of ewe lambs under the trees next to the wool shed for people to get close to, the cows were in the lounging stalls under the fans so that everyone got the chance to get close to the animals. The rest of the flock of sheep stayed in the barn because of the heat. We would take the trailer by the pasture, I would take a bucket of feed, call everyone out and there would be a little procession of the ewes and lambs following nose to tail to the feed troughs. There were a lot of ladies came by who were interested in seeing how the wool becomes yarn and other ways to utilize the wool. Leslie Hamlin set up a display of her fantastic 3-D felted sculptures for everyone to see, and Victoria Johannson dressed a loom during the day while people stood around and watched. Van was mowing hay most of the morning, Jr drove the tractor with the cattle trailer and gave tours of the dairy and chicken house areas, while Michele and Ben stayed in the studio and sold lamb/mutton as well as yarns and wool rovings. Me, I greeted each car load, counted heads, and made sure everyone was being toured from one point to the other, as well as wrangling the sheep. Many thanks to Mary George, the Catawba County Voluntary Agricultural District board and the Catawba County Planning Board for providing such a wonderful opportunity for the general public and the county farmers to get to see how food is produced in Catawba County
