Last Sunday I attended the presentation evening for the Great Midlands Fun 2014. Heres the report from the Lichfield Mercury. The mother of inspirational fund-raiser Stephen Sutton has announced she will take start and take part in next year’s Great Midlands Fun Run in honour of her heroic son. A touching tribute was paid to the fund-raising hero from Burntwood at the Fun Run awards night last Sunday (November 23). The 19-year-old lost his battle with cancer on May 14, a little over two weeks before he was set to take part in the event but his strength and determination during his fight proved an inspiration to all 7,000 fun runners who gave a #ThumbsUpForStephen at the start. At the Fun Run Awards night Stephen’s mum Jane accepted a cheque for £6,000 on behalf of the Teenage Cancer Trust and confirmed she would both start and take part in next year’s Fun Run wearing Stephen’s number. Jane was poignantly presented a framed 4097 run number that was allocated to Stephen after he registered to take part in the event. Speaking after the presentation of the awards night, Jane said: “Stephen was a runner himself and we have been out running together a few times but he was always better than me! “I’d be honoured to wear Stephen’s number. I didn’t know about it beforehand so it was a surprise and I would like to thank them for asking me. I think Stephen would be proud of me and he would be overwhelmed to have raised so much money, he wished to raise as much money as possible and it is fantastic. “It has been a rollercoaster of a year. So many things I have been asked to do that I would never have expected. It’s all because of the legacy that he has left and I am quite happy to do it. Event director Tracey Spare said: “Stephen has been the face of 2014 and Jane has been the mum of 2014. He wanted to be on the start line for this year’s run and I thought it would be a nice way for her to come back and fulfil the wish of Stephen. “The fact that Stephen as a young person demonstrated total unselfishness raising money for the Teenage Cancer Trust, particularly with the plight he was faced with was an inspiration. He registered in February to do the Fun Run and at the time the bandwagon he had built up had really taken off. “When he died, Jane asked if somebody else could run in his place. But the timing of his funeral arrangements clashed. I have asked Jane to try and complete Stephen’s bucket list and then take part in the 2015 Fun Run.” Jane also presented a cheque for £750 to Kerry Mornington from Lichfield charity Violets in Bloom which is raising money to build a children’s memorial garden at Lichfield and District Crematorium in Fradley. Kerry lost her daughter Violet aged only five, just seven weeks after she was diagnosed with hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH), as well as Hodgkin’s lymphoma. lichfieldmercury.co.uk/Stephen-Sutton-s-mum-wear-number-2015-fun-run/story-24773911-detail/story.html#ixzz3KS9MXgwg
