Last Sunday evening, I suddenly had this incessant craving for puto bumbong and my latest personal fav, dynamite sticks from the concessionaires at Plaza Anghel. And as always just like clockwork, as soon as I make my order, a kid, or sometimes a group of kids would approach me asking for alms. I usually avoid giving alms to child beggars since I feel it conditions them to be content with receiving dole-outs to get them by instead of working to make a living to provide for their needs. So rather than giving them money, Ill ask them if they want to eat and buy them an order of puto bumbong or what-have-you instead. Once they get hold of the food, they would devour it in seconds making me assume that it mustve been the first decent meal they had for the day, or maybe even for the last couple of days. But during this same Sunday evening, I was approached by this young woman to be somewhat in her early twenties tugging on my shirt asking for alms, telling me even that five pesos will suffice. (Gang limang pesus mu!) Seeing that she was healthier than a carabao, my Maricel Soriano mode kicked in and snapped back at her, Balu mo, imbes na manyad kang limus, ot eka rugu mag obra? O masikan ka pa king damulag e! To which she replied, O mabuktut ku e! I was flustered. I answered back, O balu mu nang emu man agyung kabyayan ing sarili mu, ot pepaybuktut ka pa?! Pantunan me ing tatang ning anak mu at kaya ka manyad. Nung ala yang obra, PAPAG OBRAN ME!, then I left afterwards. While driving home, I remember how many of my friends tell me to consider going into politics. I usually answer them that Im a scaredycat when it comes to, for lack of a proper term, high risk financial investments given the kind of political campaigns conducted here in the Philippines. Not to mention my propensity to sometimes speak my mind bordering on tactlessness. Further, I always maintain the principle of calling a spade a spade but such principle more often than not, doesnt sit well and goes against the grain of political diplomacy. Plus, lets face it, its more peaceful living a normal private citizens life. And after that incident with the pregnant woman, it only reinforced the fact that a successful career in the political arena for me is highly doubtful. Assuming, arguendo that I did win and end up as a legislator, my first order of business is propose a bill seeking for the imposition of stiff penalties, penal in nature if need be, for parents who produce children yet are incapable of rearing them properly and providing for their needs. That aside, maybe propose legislation to impose a five year suspension of license for PUV drivers whose wanton disregard for traffic rules and/or manner of driving as they ply their routes leaves much to be said, or, my personal favourite, allowing any individual to puncture the tires and/or key the car of motorists who are just plain assholes that mere proper parking of their vehicles in a car park is rocket science for them. Shit, kapag hindi pa sila nagtanda nun, ewan ko nalang! However, I am willing to bet my bottom peso that once that day comes, all them human rights advocates and organisations will be asking for my head! Heck, I wont even be surprised if an effigy of my likeness will be burned at Plaza Miranda or Mendiola while they shout profanities against my person. That said, why bother contemplating on something thats an obvious exercise in futility? I sincerely believe Im not cut out for this shit. Bottom line, my foray in politics is doomed to fail even before it begins. Nuf Said.
