Last Thursday two Odyssey elementary student participated in a helium balloon launch run by the husband of our afterschool teacher Barb. As part of the project a large (6+ foot diameter) gas balloons (helium), carry packages (2-3 lb payloads) to very high altitudes (over 100,000 feet - the edge of space), where they burst; the payload returns to earth (via parachute) and is recovered. Payloads include (as a minimum) radio tracking systems & cameras. Flights last 2 hrs or more, and span hundreds of miles. It was a whole lot of fun!
