Last Vegas- It seems that every year, we get at least one movie that seems to be sponsored by AARP. Such films in past years have included Cocoon, Grumpy Old Men, and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. This year’s film that comes complete with false teeth and a new hip is Last Vegas. In Last Vegas, Billy (Michael Douglas) is a guy pushing 70 that has never been married. However, after attending the funeral of a friend of his, he decides to abruptly marry his girlfriend that is 1/3 his age. Wanting to have the time of his life before his wedding, Billy decides to have his bachelor party and wedding in Vegas. So, he calls up his childhood friends Archie (Morgan Freeman), Sam (Kevin Kline), and Paddy (Robert De Niro) to meet him in Vegas. Eventually, the four old guys are reunited in Vegas and prepare for the time of their lives. While there, they live it up by partying, bring up past memories that tore them apart, squabble with young punks, and even meet a lounge singer (Mary Steenburgen) that may tear the group apart again. Directed by John Turtletaub (Cool Runnings, National Treasure), Last Vegas is the sort of comedy that is predictable to a T, but is still charming and fun enough to say that it is worth a look. After seeing the trailer, I pretty much knew exactly what I was in for, and the movie certainly delivers that. We get storylines for each of them that we’ve seen before as well as numerous “old fart” jokes throughout. However, I must admit that seeing these four Oscar winning guys together (for the first time ever) was quite a treat and they seem to elevate the movie to passable. Why, even Oscar winner Mary Steenburgen is a lot of fun in the film as well. Last Vegas also brings some moments that are pretty touching as well that are complementary. So, while Last Vegas really offers no surprises and the ultimate outcome is as clear as day, I enjoyed this little comedy that shows fives outstanding veteran actors having the time of their lives. While not great, I liked it and say that it is worth a rental, or at least seeing it for the matinee price before getting the early bird dinner (last old joke, I promise). 3 out of 5.
