Last chance to see the Green Light District exhibition featuring my work #LaBiomista. The scale model of our project in the Stad Genk will afterwards travel to the cosmOpolitan gallery for the new exhibition Cytoskeleton opening on the 19th of February. As a conceptual artist, Koen Vanmechelen researches the social function of art. He creates multimedia work on the central themes of bio-cultural diversity, immunity and fertility. In previous years, Vanmechelen has enjoyed close working relationships with various scientists. Koen Vanmechelen sees Rewilding as an important weapon in the fight to safeguard bio-cultural diversity on our planet. This implies the kick-starting of ecological processes in natural habitats and the de-domestication of species, in order to create a more passionate and less sterile – wilder – society. Vanmechelen demonstrates the relevance of this approach in La Biomista, a new, artistic site in Genk. This re-wilding station houses offices, a studio (designed by the famous architect Mario Botta), workshops and an animal park. Visitors to the site are confronted with top technological bio-hybridisations and the artist’s latest artistic-scientific experiments with lamas, ostriches, eagles, owls or camels.
