Last fall a search and rescue volunteer came across the old - TopicsExpress

Last fall a search and rescue volunteer came across the old wreckage of an airplane in the Craters of the Moon lava field. Follow up investigation this summer revealed a couple of clues which led to a National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) record of a March 12, 1971 aircraft accident. The plane, a twin-engine Piper Apache flew into bad weather (low clouds, fog and snow showers) then experienced a loss of power in both engines due to carburetor icing. The plane made a wheels up landing in the lava and then caught fire. Given the time of year there may have been considerable snow cover at the time. According to the NTSB record all three persons on-board survived the accident. It appeared the wreckage had been moved a short distance and partially buried with lava rocks following the accident. The site of the crash was made part of Craters of the Moon National Preserve in 2000. The National Park Service would appreciate any additional information people might have regarding the accident.
