Last minute addition to The Art of the Drum Solo post! The lovely drummer, Casey Bond has weighed in with her opinion : Let me just say something about the leap of faith that a dancers must take when they do their first live drum solo. Because I started out playing bass doumbek, the lead drummer would often give me the opportunity to play the short drum solo for the belly dancers who were new to performing to live music. I always tried to speak with the dancer in advance- to let her know that I was on her side and would do my best to showcase HER strengths. When a new dancer knows that the drummer really wants her to succeed I know it boosts her confidence. I would make it very clear that I really, really enjoy doing this- and that we woere going to have FUN together. Most dancers can choreograph something wonderful to a recorded drum piece, but to me great drum solos are live, improvised, in the moment conversations between the dancer and the drummmer for the delight of a live audience.
