Last month I fulfilled a promise to Chun Woo that was a couple of years old: I got him some sugar cane to try. As I expected, he didnt love it. And just as well: I seldom see good heavy sugar cane for sale, and as I understand it, habitually chewing sugar cane sharpens ones teeth. Sidney W. Mintz argued in _Sweetness and Power_ that hunger for this sucrose-producing grass drove powerful currents in world history: plantation production, colonialism, factories for mass production, labor relations that includes the new and toxic phenomenon of racial enslavement. Sugar cane is native to tropical and subtropical areas with a lot of water. It is food for cane beetles, the larvae of various butterflies and moths, and leaf-cutting ants, termites, spittlebugs, and planthoppers.
