Last night, 18-year old Black teenager, Antonio Martin, was shot and killed by a police officer in Berkeley, Missouri, just 2 miles outside of Ferguson, Missouri. The police officer had been assigned a body camera, but wasnt wearing it at the time of the incident. Police allege that Martin had a gun and pointed it at the officer before the officer shot and killed him. However, there are differing accounts of last night’s events. As the investigation continues, and the facts come to light, we’ll know more. What we know now is that last night a woman lost her son, the police killed another young Black man and here we are debating the use of deadly force, the gross disparity between Black people killed by police and white people killed by police (1 every 28 hours) and the value of Black lives in America. I’ll reserve judgment of the incident until I have more information, but regardless of the facts, my heart and condolences go out to the family and friends of Antonio Martin, the community of Berkeley, Missouri and Black men everywhere.
