Last night, Dad had asked me to do a Top 10 of my favorite sports - TopicsExpress

Last night, Dad had asked me to do a Top 10 of my favorite sports movies. For me, this was difficult. Mom and Dad, youre expecting drama sports movies to be on my list, but every time I see a sports movie, its always a comedy. So, if Im going to do this list, sadly, this is gonna feature more comedies than dramas. But for the drama films Im choosing on this list, I hope you find acceptable. So, light the torch, cheer real loud, and do the Wave, because here is my Top 10 Favorite Sports Films. On your marks, get set, go! 10 - Cinderella Man (2005) - Sport featured in the film: Boxing I hope youre happy that I chose a drama first. Directed by one of my favorite directors Ron Howard, this film tells the dramatic story of boxer James J. Braddock, and his fall from grace and his comeback in the 1930s, during the Great Depression. Aussie Russell Crowe plays Braddock, and hes wonderful as always. Also wonderful are Renee Zellweger, who plays Braddocks wife, and Paul Giamatti, who plays Braddocks trainer Joe Gould. Giamatti actually got nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this performance. Overall, Cinderella Man is a good sports drama that is sure to make you cheer, and remains a fine addition to my collection of Ron Howard films. 9 - Happy Gilmore (1996) - Sport featured in the film: Golf Often considered Adam Sandlers best comedy, Sandler plays a man named Happy Gilmore who is the worst hockey player in history. In order to save his grandmothers house from being sold, Happy takes up a new sport, golf, and is surprisingly really good at it. This results in a series of gags and incidents as Happy competes in a golf tournament to save his grandmothers house. This film has all of the humor and gags that makes Adam Sandler great, and thats enough to rank Happy Gilmore as one of my favorite funniest sports comedies. 8 - Miracle (2004) - Sport featured in the film: Ice hockey Ever heard of the Miracle on Ice, an Olympic ice hockey event where the Americans defeated the Soviets? Well, this defining moment in history is depicted to absolute perfection in this 2004 Disney drama. The cinematography of the hockey games featured in the film are so awe-inspiring, the actors playing the American hockey players are great actors, and Kurt Russell is a gem as the teams coach Herb Brooks. Also, the final hockey game is one of the best ever movie dramatizations Ive ever seen. And honesty, its so cool and awesome that Disney is the one that made this movie, despite all of the wrenching scenes and perfect dramatizations in this film. For any of you that have not seen this Disney sports wonder, see it. Youll find nothing but a miracle after watching this. 7 - Speed Racer (2008) - Sport featured in the film: Auto racing Why didnt I put this on the Top 10 Movies Based on a Television Series? I do not know. But what I do know is that this movie is one of the most incredible racing movies I have ever seen. Also, this was the first movie to introduce me to the nonlinear narrative, a narrative in where some scenes play out out of chronological order, so theres a lot of flashbacks in this film. But that doesnt mean the film isnt incredible. With great actors, a brilliant story, and spectacular racing sequences, Speed Racer sure makes you go to watch this film again and again and again. Also, the directors of this movie are the Wachowskis, the directors of The Matrix. Just saying. 6 - The Rookie (2002) - Sport featured in the film: Baseball Dennis Quaid turns in one of his best performances as the oldest Major League Baseball rookie in history Jim Morris. The film follows Morriss career from 1999 to 2000, and every single element in the film, the actors performances, the baseball games, the emotional setting, really work in this Disney film. This is also one of few live-action Disney films that has one of Disneys mottos, which is believe in your dreams. Overall, Dennis Quaids performance, the story, and the great direction by director John Lee Hancock make The Rookie one of the most emotional and beautiful Disney movies Ive ever seen, period. 5 - Kingpin (1996) - Sport featured in the film: Ten-pin bowling Have I ever told you that ten-pin bowling is my favorite sport? Well, for a couple of years, Ive been wanting to see a movie that has bowling as its main sport. Well, Im very lucky Ive found this sports comedy on the Comedy Movie Channel. This comedy tells the hilarious tale about a washed-up bowler who embarks on a road trip along with an Amish man and a woman to enter a bowling tournament to win some money so that the bowler can keep his apartment. Story not impressing you enough? Well, add to that the funny performances of its cast that includes Woody Harrelson, Randy Quaid and Bill Murray, and youve got one hell of a funny sports movie. 4 - Rush (2013) - Sport featured in the film: Auto racing Another auto racing movie, and another sports film directed by Ron Howard. Except this film is extremely mega-cool and mega-enjoyable. Retelling the tale of the greatest auto-racing rivalry in the 1970s between James Hunt and Niki Lauda is no easy task, but Howard really succeeds that task with his great directing skills and perfect dramatizations. Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl are extremely well-acted in their roles as Hunt and Lauda respectively. Overall, Rush is a well-crafted racing drama with the most exhilarating and realistic race sequences ever seen in a movie. 3 - Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (2006) - Sport featured in that film: Auto racing Man, will auto racing leave me alone? Actually, the best thing about this movie is not the actual sport itself. No, its the whole cast that makes the movie. Will Ferrell, John C. Riley and Sacha Baron Cohen are really extremely funny in this movie. Ferrell plays a NASCAR racer who only wants to go fast, and believes in nothing but winning. When he doesnt win a race, his life suddenly goes downhill; he ends up falling out with his wife and his best friend, and is now living with his mother. The only thing that can make him rise up to the top again is winning the Talladega 500. This is one of Ferrells best roles Ive seen, period, and it remains a laugh-out-loud favorite of mine. 2 - Cool Runnings (1993) - Sport featured in that film: Bobsledding Im really hoping Hollywood will never make a bobsledding film, because nothing can beat Cool Runnings, the comedy-drama about a Jamaican bobsledding team. This was Disneys first ever film based on a true sports story, but unlike all of the other sports dramas, Cool Runnings contained laugh-out-loud comedy. This threw a lot of people off, as they were expecting to see a drama and not a comedy, but everybody eventually grew to like this movie, and I love it, too. Cool Runnings combines both the two genres that make a sports movie great. The story is wonderful, the Jamaican actors are fun to watch, and John Candy is believable and wonderful as the coach. This movies funny, its heartwarming, its just the great markings of a good sports film, and a great Disney film to be exact. 1 - Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004) - Sport featured in that film: Dodgeball Im so sorry, Mom and Dad. The #1 pick is a comedy. Im sorry, I really am. But theres no denying that this is one of the most mega-funny films I have ever seen. This hit comedy focuses on a rivalry between the owners of Average Joes, a small gym, and Globo-Gym, a competing big-budget gym located across the street. The people who run Average Joes enter a dodgeball tournament in an attempt to earn the money necessary to prevent the gym from being purchased by Globo-Gym to build a new parking lot for their gym members. Globo-Gym enters a team in the tournament in an effort to ensure that Average Joes gym fails. The dodgeball games are a lot of fun to watch, the gags and jokes are funny and clever, and Ben Stiller is enjoyable and funny as the villain. If you dont think thats the best sports film, Dad, I highly encourage you to see this movie. It is that funny and great to put this at #1. I really hope you agree with my list of sports movies. What is your favorite sports film thats on my list? Are all the dramas I picked well-deserving on this list? Post a comment if you want to answer, and I really hope you enjoyed reading this list and me making Dads idea a reality.
