Last night I attended an incredible lecture by Krista Tippett at the University of Tulsa. One quote stood out to me in particular. Tippett explained that as we develop our understanding of God and the world, we should take care to view reality not as we wish it to be but as it really is, in all of its mystery and its brutality. I tend to be a harsh realist at times. I derive joy from understanding the true nature of things, regardless of how difficult they may be to accept. Upon first hearing Tippetts suggestion, I immediately noticed the harsh realist within me having a strong reaction: the emotional side of this realist jumped up and down, exclaiming, Yes! Yes yes yes! But upon further consideration, the rational side of my harsh realist questions this statement. Not as we wish it to be. Where did we get any sort of idea of the ideal? And why should that ideal be ignored? Is it possible to view the world unfettered by a filter of what better things could be possible? Has anyone actually achieved this? What would the world look like if this was achieved? Welcoming your thoughts, Facebookland. In the spirit of Krista Tippett, lets have a conversation.
