Last night I chanced to encounter an old friend, a Washington - TopicsExpress

Last night I chanced to encounter an old friend, a Washington University in St. Louis engineering professor of Indian origin at Ciceros St. Louis, and we discussed the recent unionizatoin initiative of St. Louis Adjunct Action. He was generally sympathetic but expressed concern that full time Lecturers would be downsized to Adjuncts, and tenure track professors would be phased out in favor of transient academic migrant workers only marginally better treated than they are now, and this would not be in the best interests of the students. I concur, based on my long experience as a full time Lecturer at Wash U and as an Adunct at six local colleges and in the University College - Washington University in St Louis. He then went on to discuss Hindi Professor Varsi, really a Lecturer halfway through his eighth year here. I hope he is being treated decently and I am proud of the role I may have played in this. In autumn 2007 one of my students, both University College and Cervantes Free University related to me a conversation he had had with a distinguished scholar who wished to remain anonymous, informing us that they were keeping Varsi on as a sop to the ethnic studies South Asian Americans while throwing me under the bus but they were planning the same treatment to Varsi for trumped up reasons. I posted about this on the Student Life comment board and some of his students agitated on his behalf to get him fairer treatment. I hope it really worked.
