Last night I found an old pair of shoes buried in my closet. They were probably 15 years old but in good shape. They still fit but were in need of a good polishing, so I spent about an hour last night reconditioning them to a nice high shine and new laces. This morning as I got ready for church services, I put on my best pastor shirt, a nice blazer and new, freshly creased pants, and couldnt resist but put on those comfy old shoes. I thought I had delivered a great, motivating and spiritually uplifting sermon today and after the service, I was milling about in the lobby. In front of me there were two elderly women and a nice, older gentleman pushing one of the wheelchair bound women. They had their backs to me and did not know I was behind them. I was hoping to hear a comment or two about the sermon, but one said, I see the pastor got new shoes. and the other replied Must have been an early Christmas present. My wife whispered to me Too bad your sermon didnt make as good an impression on them as your 15 year old shoes. Thanks, wife. A quote by Rodney Dangerfield came quickly to mind.
