Last night I had an extremely vivid experience of Sleep Paralysis. - TopicsExpress

Last night I had an extremely vivid experience of Sleep Paralysis. This is a very strange phenomenon recognised by the medical and science fraternities. I think it happened to me once before in my early teens, but not quite as dramatic as last night’s episode. I am not for one second of the belief it was a “paranormal” experience, more so a phenomena of atonia and hypnagogia. I did experience auditory hallucinations and I could “hear” whispering, but I saw nothing. I did sense a “sinister presence” too, but again I believe this was a deception created by my mind whilst in a hypnagogic state. I awoke seemingly suddenly at around 2.30am, and felt some heavy force pressing down on my chest area, as if something was trying to pin me down. I was able to move my eyes, but unable to move my head, arms or legs. I was unable to make any sound either. I tried fighting hard against it which seemed to make it worse (if it were ever to happen to me again, I shall try and be calm and relaxed). As the pressure seemed to weigh heavy down on me, I managed to make some sound though only “residue” noise rather than from my vocal cords (sorry, I don’t really know how to explain it any better). To my shame, the words I tried to say were of the less than noble variety, in my attempt to tell this (what I was believing to be at the time) invisible entity to “f*** off”! That was when I heard indistinct whispering above my head, but couldn’t make out what was being “said”. The whole thing I think only lasted around 2 or 3 minutes, before I was able to become fully awake (physically as well as mentally) and I was a bit shocked for about 5 minutes before drifting off back to sleep. What an experience! I admit, it wasn’t very pleasant at the time and quite terrifying at not having the ability to move or speak, but in a strange twisted sort of way, I would be curious to experience it again, now that I won’t be caught so “off guard” and have some understanding of it, to see if I can exercise some sort of control over the situation mentally. I had read about Sleep Paralysis previously, but nothing in great depth. However doing a bit of research today, I have ticked a few boxes regarding some of the circumstances that are believed to be contributing factors to the phenomenon (I have had erratic sleeping patterns this past week, and I was also sleeping in the supine position). A freaky, bizarre occurrence that is probably the weirdest thing I have ever personally experienced! Not recommended for those of a faint heart or disposition! webmd/sleep-disorders/guide/sleep-paralysis
