Last night I had the pleasure to witness the debut gig from a new band on the Milton Keynes music scene called Streetlight, an 8 piece rock, pop, soul, funk, country covers band. A group of competent musicians (most of whom are already well known locally), with three main female vocals, keys, sax, drums, guitar and bass, the possible scope is endless, and they aren’t afraid to take risks. Playing everything from 1960s soul to modern chart hits, to attempt Carly Rea Jepsen’s “Call me Maybe” (and pull it off) on your first public performance, is either very brave or very foolhardy. I feel it was the former as each musician on stage knew their place within the overall picture of what was to be achieved. My only criticism was the keyboards could have been a bit louder, but that was the only fault I could find. Other than that, there were a couple of mistakes (missed cues, sloppy endings) which were treated with good humour by both band and audience. With more gigs behind them and more on-stage time ,I think this band will become a major force on the local music scene, so if you are planning a function and need a band that can perform just about anything and everything, then grab them now before the price goes up!. If you see Streetlight advertised in a local pub …. do yourself a favour, go and see them.
