Last night I heard Madison whimpering on the landing at the top of the stairs. I ran up and asked what was the matter and she said she missed her Mommy Jeanna. I told her I missed her too and we hugged and cried for a while, ending up with a pile of tear soaked tissues all around us. I told her it was ok to cry when she misses her mommy. I told her that tears are one of the languages of Love and that her tears were messages of Love to Mommy Jeanna and that Mommy Jeanna would be certain to receive them. In an effort to distract her (and, frankly, myself) I asked if she wanted to do some puzzles (She loves jigsaw puzzles) and she agreed. We were working on a new one (new puzzles are hard but fun) and she got up suddenly and disappeared into the master bath. I heard her crying again but chose to leave her alone, sensing she wanted privacy. After a while she came out and announced she had put her Happy Face on. We high fived and hugged and spent the rest of the evening doing puzzles. She told me this morning that she went to the bathroom so she could look in the mirror and talk to herself. What did you say to yourself?, I asked. She said, I had to tell myself that even though Mommy Jeanna is dead and she is not coming back, I still have to live my own life. Madison just turned 5 years old in January. I am pretty sure she has had conversations with an Angel recently.
