Last night I joined several citizens in offering input on another proposed student apartment hi-rise in downtown Athens. I believe Clint McCrory summed it up best by saying “It’s remarkable how many things are wrong with [this plan].” I hope the developers will take the many concerns to heart and come up with an acceptable project that will benefit the entire community, though the statement that they hope to maintain the same shape of the building elicits concern. Most Planning Commissioners pointed out that the actual design of the building was just one of many inappropriate things about the project. Unfortunately, this is the one aspect of the project that our codes can least affect as it lies outside of the Downtown Historic District where aesthetic design guidelines are lax at best. There is a very good reason why Athens is known as The Classic City and this neo-Brutalist, spaceshipesque design poses an affront to the quaint and funky vibe for which Downtown Athens is known far and wide. This is particularly true of a building of such unfathomably massive scale that will completely dominate the Downtown skyline and dwarf every steeple, dome, and cornice in sight... flagpole/news/in-the-loop/acc-planning-commission
