Last night, I observed my first class as part of Literacy - TopicsExpress

Last night, I observed my first class as part of Literacy Volunteers of Tucson. It was a writing workshop, and I can honestly say that I don’t think I’ve been quite this impressed for a while. One of the authors really stood out! He had an amazing imagination and was working on a story that would rival Christopher Paolini or Steven King. Knowing that only a few years ago this person couldn’t even read made it all the more impressive. When he spoke of the story he was writing, it was like he was living it; not a detail too small to be overlooked; it was like he was relating his life. Then, after a Q&A period with the tutor, the author began editing his story; and I was even further amazed, if that is possible. Because he is a relatively recent reader, his typing was incredibly slow both because of his limited spelling capability and the fact that he was using the “hunt and peck” method of typing. Suddenly, it hit me … what an astounding feat to have already typed 9 complete pages!!! Imagine having that amazing an imagination and not being able to get it out on paper. I think this might well be the most rewarding volunteer opportunity I’ve ever undertaken!!
