Last night I saw Les Miserables at Wright State University. Its one of those classics Id always heard about but had never seen. It was a wonderful production (as always). Now I have to go to the history books. I thought some of the directors comments in the program were particularly apropos: Seldom in my life has a show Im directing proven such a thought-provoking reflection of real events unfolding in the news. Soon after we went into rehearsals ..., this show became a not-so-distant mirror of what was happening on the evening news. From the Ukraine to Caracas, people were building barricades. Soon our cast and I were taping news articles to the walls of our rehearsal hall. Our space became a gallery of photos of passionate students and irate veterans, of courageous mothers clutching their daughters while they confronted police in ski-masks. Some were pictures of the barricades of Paris in the early 19th: others of Cairo and Tiananmen Square. The parallels to Hugos epic tale were uncanny, and haunting. -- W.
