Last night I saw a film, BAREFOOT IN THE PARK (1966) starring Robert Redford and Jane Fonda about a newlywed couple in NYC. The film itself was great, with snippets of NYC back then and a very funny interesting story, but what got me what their tiny crummy apartment. Unless you lived in NYC for sometime, you would not believe the living conditions there.I lived in 7 different apartments there over 37 years, and each place had some catastrophic thing wrong with it. This film reminded me of the recurring nightmares I would have. One involved walking through a demolished hallway to begin entering my place. Then I had to crawl through a hole in the ceiling, through a vertical dirt tunnel only as wide as me, grab the few handholds, wind my way somehow through a trap door to my apartment. Another recurring nightmare was coming home to find the doors to my place open, or off their hinges. This is what living in NYC does to your mind. And keep in mind, most places I had were very highly coveted by other people. They didn’t know about a rat jumping out of a hole in my ceiling onto my floor while I’m eating dinner, and then finding a pile of completely stripped clean chicken bones from my garbage he was collecting. Or the monster neighbors, or the incesent noise, or the harassing landlords. So if you ever see BAREFOOT IN THE PARK, when you see their apartment, they are not exaggerating, they are understating.. But remember, people put up with it because living in NYC is that good.
