Last night, I saw the film, The Theory of Everything, a biographical drama film about the life of British theoretical physicist, Stephen Hawking, and based on the book Traveling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, written by Jane Wilde Hawking. The film explores Stephen Hawkings life from his time as a student at Cambridge University, him falling in love with fellow Cambridge University student, Jane Wilde, his battle with ALS (also known as Lou Gehrigs Disease), to the writing of his best-selling book, A Brief History of Time. Pros: This film at the very least needs to be nominated for some of the Academy Awards. One of which should be for Eddie Redmayne as Best Actor. The cast and storyline were fantastic and I was in awe by the performances. The film had humor, drama, and even a few touches of sadness. However, the way Eddie Redmayne portrayed Stephen Hawking was practically flawless. ALS is a disease that is nearly impossible to fake, but Redmayne was able to pull it off with amazing talent and is, in my eyes, a fantastic actor. Opposite Redmayne was Felicity Jones as Jane Wilde Hawking. She was just as amazing as Eddie Redmayne and I could almost feel her frustration as the responsibilities of caring for her ailing husband as well as their three children began to take its toll on her. This is a film that I believe everyone should see. Cons: Portions of the film seemed to drag on and although Hawkings theories were explored to a certain extent, the film should have delved deeper into his ideas and give a further exploration to why he is the famous scientist he is today. Overall, I give this film four stars out of a possible five.
