Last night I walked back from the theatre in central London for maybe a couple of miles openly hand in hand with my partner, Alastair, sharing a romantic kiss by the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square and just enjoying being a normal couple in love in one of the greatest cities on earth. I did not feel afraid of other people or of the authorities. OK, there is always the lingering worry that we might encounter homophobia - it isnt eradicated by any means - but we are blessed to live in a country with legislation that respects our relationship as equal and intrinsically valuable, and to live in a liberal, cosmopolitan world city. This news from Russia is desperately sad. Futile, self-defeating, ignorant and cruel scapegoating. Russia was a nation that once had a great soul and produced art that rocked the world. Now it inflicts a deep wound on itself as well as each marginalised, victimised, persecuted individual.
