Last night, I watched NBCs New Years party with Carson Daley. He was wearing an NYPD baseball cap and apparently took flack for doing so. I have trouble with that. The men and women who serve our communities day in and day out put their lives on the line for you and for me, almost all of the time doing so without giving a thought about their own lives. In the last quarter of 2014, two significant incidents, one in Missouri and one in New York, have changed not only the publics opinion of these men but have also changed their view of us. It has become adversarial at best. In NY, the police are not making routine stops for fear of their own lives. Protests around the country have made them the enemy in the eyes of some. They have turned their backs, literally, on the mayor of their city because of the incidents that have caused the publc, wrongly in my mind, to not trust them. These men and woman are here to prtoect us. I leave you with this thought: If there is no order then what is left is chaos. When the planes crashed into the World Trade Center on 9/11, this nation rallied around the men and woman who protect us while that chaos resounded on the other side of the globe. Maybe I will catch crap for this but chaos is what those people want. Its what they thrive on. Its why the terror networks around the world thrive. If we contnue to blame the police in this country for doing their job, we slide furhter into that chaos and then we can never win the battle. I think as a country, our New Years Resolution should be to unite around the men and women in blue who work so hard every day to protect us and to stop allowing the chaos to win. Maybe I am being entirely too optimistic but we owe it to ourselves to make our world a better place. It might start by actually saying thank you to these officeers instead of blaming them when they have to think about making a life and death decision in the heat of the moment.
