Last night I watched What about Bob? again -- And this time in my career I fully appreciate the brilliance. For reference on the full plot -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/What_about_bob What About Bob? is a 1991 comedy film directed by Frank Oz, and starring Bill Murray and Richard Dreyfuss. Murray plays Bob Wiley, a psychiatric patient who follows his egotistical psychiatrist Dr. Leo Marvin (Dreyfuss) on vacation. When the unstable Bob befriends the other members of Marvins family, it pushes the doctor over the edge. Elevators, germs, death; theres always something that could get him. Much like how people live (if you can call it that) in everyday life. Maybe you know someone who is so attached to fear and problems, that your life is a BIG problem. But moving on .. Theres a few brilliant life lessons in this film: Bob says to treat everyone you meet like a phone .. Some are temporarily unavailable .. But dont break the connection .. It can be comparable to dont burn bridges. And its so true how he thinks even though he is the patient. Bob agrees to take a vacation from his problems at the request of Dr. Leo Marvin (Richard Dreyfuss). It highlights the concept of giving yourSELF permission to take action, and in turn, create a (new) result. There is a scene in the film where Dr. Leos young son is afraid of diving into the lake, and Bob basically demonstrates how to learn by doing. You can learn from reading books about speaking on stage, AND you can learn (potentially faster) by DOing it. You can also conquer your fears by having the opportunity to turn someone ELSEs obstacle into an opportunity by teaching to learn. Bob fakes Turrets (sp?) sydrome because he says If I fake it, I dont have it. Funny how a lot of people fake being broke .. You can either make broke and poof a problem (which has solutions) or your LIFESTYLE. One of the final scenes between Bob and Dr. Leo involves Bob being tied up with rope and explosives. Bob relates (in his therapy) that hes all tied up inside, and if he doesnt untie himself (free himself from his mental slavery to fear), if he doesnt untie himself within his emotional knots, he will explode. I highly recommend you watching this even if you arent one to appreciate the brilliance that Bob demonstrates in this film, as far as how our problems have PERMISSION to stay until we permit otherwise. Thoughts?
