Last night, I watched a video of a local woman with ALS. I have never met her, but I feel like I have, from reading all the posts from my friends who love her and who have participated in the ice bucket challenge as a result. I have also read differing views of the challenge (some supportive, some negative). So let me say this. Those of us who fight against a disease that has stolen, or is stealing a loved one are passionate. That passion is the manifestation of our love. I remember my first moment reading about mesothelioma, and thinking - I would have liked to live my whole life without knowing about this. I still feel that way, 12 years later. But I wasnt given a choice. None of us were. So we do what we can with what we are given. So for the daughter who organizes a 5k/golf outing for a Mom with Alzheimers, for the daughter who started the random acts of kindness challenge for her mom with MS, for the son who cycles miles for his Mom who died of cancer, for the sister who is making sure her sisters needs are being met while battling breast cancer, and for those of you who dumped ice on your head for your friend, this daughter who hosts a race for her Dad gets it. We do it because we love so fiercely. We do it because we do not want to see another family suffer as we have. We do it, because we are called to do so.
