Last night, I watched an extremely powerful documentary called Half the Sky, a compelling story of women around the world who face atrocities everyday. However, these women still have hope and their spirits are not broken. Half the Sky emphasized how important education is in order to battle female oppression.Today, one of my fourth graders came bouncing in enthusiastically to tell me who she learned about at school. She learned about Malala Yousafzai, a brave girl who was shot and almost killed by the Taliban because she wanted to go to school. She continued to tell me how grateful she was that she can go to school and how she thinks Malala is a hero. It was a pretty awesome moment. To honor the women who risk everything for their education, value yours- it isnt something to take for granted.
