Last night I went to an old time Brush Arbor revival, mainly to please some dear friends. We have profound ideological differences which are virtually meaningless in the grand scheme of things. On the way I ran into a young woman I know who was hungry and looking for food. I suggested she accompany me to the revival, and after fetching her bible, she did. Ive known her for some time and am aware she has some significant emotional challenges. Before arriving on the trolley, I gathered that she might not be able to behave herself so I told her, The last time I took a woman to church, she couldnt refrain from running her mouth and was rude and uncouth. When in Rome, do as the Romans do. She assured me she would behave. Intuitively, I knew she wouldnt and braced myself. Well, the evangelist launched into his sermon with a strong, booming voice (I love the cadence of the whole thing). We were on the front row and he started blasting Joel Osteen and megachurches and electronic preachers. I could tell she was becomming agitated. He was talking about changes (both good and bad) and said he liked running water and indoor plumbing. She said, I dont. I shot her a nasty glare. She shut up. Then he began a litany of how modern Christianity is perverted. When he said, The bible says if you dont work neither shall you eat, she spoke up. But it also says..... You get the picture. I leaned over and whispered in her ear, Shut the hell up. She was not amused and I thought there might be a scene. If anyone is actually reading this and wants to hear the rest of the story, Ill gladly relate it.
